Cotacachi National Park - Cayapas
This natural treasure, with a high scenic and landscape potential, is located approximately two hours from Quito. To get to the Upper Zone, take the Panamericana Norte to the city of Cotacachi, from there, continue for 12 kilometers of paved road until you enter the protected area. This protected area was created on August 29, 1968 and has an area of 243,638 hectares. “This nature reserve has several tourist facilities that attract the user. We have activities such as hiking, boat rides, lodging, food and guiding services from the surrounding communities”. Currently, the Public Tourism Company of Cotacachi has under its administration the lodging cabins, the restaurant and the boat ride. Location Located in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Imbabura, it constitutes one of the most important conservation areas in the world, as it belongs to the Chocó Biogeographical Region, a neotropical natural corridor with great biodiversity. Cotacachi volcano
This volcano has been the subject of numerous visits and scientific studies by well-known geologists such as Wolf, Wimper, Stubel and La Condamine. It is the only volcano with the presence of snow in the province, it is called Huarmi Raso or Cerro Hembra by the Quechua people. This volcano currently shows small signs of activity that are visible on a boat tour. Its name is derived from a language of pre-Inca origin "Tsui cocha" or "lagoon of the gods". The waters of the Cuicocha volcano come from the melting of the Cotacachi. There is no appreciable activity in this volcano, the activity is currently limited only to the Cuicocha volcanic caldera, a few kilometers to the south. Where you can see gas emanations from the bottom of the lagoon. In the decades between 1960 and 1980, ice sellers from Cotacachi climbed the volcano with espadrilles and without any protection against the sun and cold looking for snow deposits. Location It is located in the northern highlands, in the western chain of the Andes mountain range. Recommendations It is recommended to wear warm clothes because of the weather, which is a bit cold. Bring drinking water, comfortable and strong shoes, preferably trekking shoes. Ecotourists are recommended to bring warm clothing for cold weather, rubber boots, repellent, raincoat, camping equipment, flashlight, and food with high energy content. Bring a first aid kit and disinfectant medications. It is important that before traveling you inform yourself about the Park, characteristic resources, conditions, stay recommendations, etc.

San Juan de Lachas Pump Workshop
This workshop is specialized in the elaboration of drums of the bomb, popular rhythm of the Afro-Ecuadorian culture. It is located in the community of San Juan de Lachas, in the Mira canton of the Carchi province. Its owner is Ezequiel Sevilla, one of the last builders of the Bomba drum. Ezequiel in his youth learned to make these percussion instruments from his father, Manuel Sevilla. He currently continues an arduous task in collecting the materials, which when assembled will make up the drum. These materials are found in the desert pampas of the Valle del Chota, as well as in the subtropical forests of the northwest of the Ecuadorian highlands, on which several black communities are settled that surpass the inter-Andean panorama of the valley. In addition to giving his pumps a very neat aesthetic and acoustic finish, this workshop keeps alive and fresh the practice of manufacturing them in all the sizes and colors that he thinks possible. Thus, its varied collection of more than thirty bombs shows the wide range of sizes (from 15 cm to 40 cm in diameter) and, consequently, the varied timbres that each one emits, from the highest tones (small bombs), to the most serious (big bombs).

Cuicocha Lagoon
Cuicocha lagoon, also called “Lagoon of the Gods” or “Tsui Cocha”, is located in the Cotacachi-Cayapas natural reserve, 13 km from Cotacachi canton, province of Imbabura, northern of Ecuador. It originated from the Cotacachi volcano implosion and has 2 islets in its center. The translation of its name would be “Lagoon of Guinea Pigs” because of the presence of these animals in its islets. Its most representative plant is the totora “typha” and its waters are translucent and bluish. The visitors can take boat trips through the islets Yerovi and Teodoro Wolf and the “Dreamy Canal”; they can also practice diving, kayaking or trekking along the path that surrounds it. A legend tells that Cotacachi volcano was the son of the “Rucu Pichincha” (old man) and of the Cotacachi or “Huarmi Huasi” (female hill), and one day the two mountains argued and the father took the son (the “Guagua Pichincha”, a mountain located next to the city of Quito). In the site there was a hole which later became a lagoon because of the mother’s tears. Cuicocha has the form of an enclosed bowl between mountains. By visiting the islets it is possible to observe bubbles in the water, which emerge from the depths in gushes. Supposedly, the lagoon has no bottom. Several people have testified that they saw a mermaid or an ancient city on its vicinity. Here, mysterious phenomena happen, such as the sudden change of the wind’s direction, it is said that this happens when Cuicocha is angry with the visitors and there also are disappearances, screams and weird sounds. The water’s mirror is attractive for its color, but it also frightens, shudders. There is the legend of the gild guinea pig; the first person in seeing it becomes rich, and the second one changes into a duck.
